Removal of the gallbladder without endoscopy

Every year, 500 patients are admitted to HUG A&E with a gallbladder problem. They mostly come with acute abdominal pain and stones in the gallbladder, visible on ultrasound. Usually, these patients are first offered an endoscopy to view any stones stuck in the bile duct, then the gallbladder is removed as a second stage.

In a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association and awarded the 2015 Prize for clinical research, the team of Dr Pouya Iranmanesh and Prof. Christian Toso from the visceral surgery department, compared the conventional treatment of this condition with a new procedure that proceeds directly to removal of gallbladder without endoscopy. The conclusion? Patients spend less time in the hospital, without prejudice to their health and it eliminates unnecessary examinations.
