Offering the best of medicine

Day after day, year after year, we are proud of transforming our services and providing the population with a high-quality university hospital.

Offrir le meilleur de la médecine

These pages offer an overview of the actions carried out in 2016 to improve the quality of hospital stays and adapt the healthcare organization.

Each year has its world firsts! In 2013, a spiral sparked a revolution in treating pulmonary emphysema. In 2014, a vestibular implant raised hopes of combating balance disorders. In 2015, two eight-day-old Siamese sisters were separated by a team headed by a HUG surgeon.

2016 follows on from previous years with two significant exploits: a transplant from an HIV+ donor to an HIV+ recipient and the use of angiography during surgical thyroid ablation.

These two world firsts hide other innovations: the discovery of an antibody to treat cancer, the use of cardioplegia to immobilise the heart muscle during an operation, recourse to extracorporeal circulation during a coronary artery bypass. And this list is far from being complete.

In other fields, the past year was marked by the opening of a geriatric emergency department at the Trois-Chêne Hospital, the affiliation of the Joli-Mont and Montana clinics to HUG and the opening of a registry office branch at the Maternity hospital.

In 2016, we reaped the first fruit from our Vision 20/20 strategic plan. This promising fruit should encourage us to double our efforts to achieve even greater performance and be attentive to our patients and partners.

We would like to thank all of the HUG members of staff, representing 180 different professions, for their outstanding commitment and express our gratitude to the authorities, patients and their loved ones for their continued trust.
