Axel Andres Doctor Axel Andres is Consultant surgeon for the Division of Digestive Surgery and for the Division of Transplantation at the University Hospitals of Geneva.

His activity is mainly focused on liver and pancreatic surgery, as well as liver, kidney, pancreas and islets of Langerhans transplantation. 

Doctor Andres is FMH specialist in general surgery (2010), FMH specialist in digestive surgery (2019), certified by the ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons) for transplantation and surgery of the liver and pancreas (2015), and certified by the European Society (EBSQ) for  liver and pancreas surgery (2018).

Doctor Andres studied medicine at the University of Geneva and obtained his federal diploma in medicine in 2001. He started his internship in surgery at the University Hospitals of Geneva, before carrying out 2 years of fundamental research in the isolation and cell transplantation laboratory (2002-2004). Subsequently, he obtained the title of Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2004, and continued his surgical education from 2001 to 2007. Afterwards, he was appointed junior consultant and worked in the Hospital of Yverdon from 2007 to 2008, then in the Hospital of Fribourg from 2008 to 2009. Doctor Andres continued his training at the University Hospitals of Geneva as junior consultant from 2009 to 2013. He later performed a fellowship in transplantation, liver surgery and pancreas surgery at the University of Alberta (Canada) from 2013 to 2015, before returning to the University Hospitals of Geneva. Since 2015, he has shared his activity between the Division of Digestive Surgery (50%) and the Division of Transplantation (50%), and was appointed consultant surgeon in 2017. Moreover, he is deputy director of the islet isolation laboratory of Langerhans (headed by Prof. Berney). 

His fields of research are mainly focused on islets of Langerhans transplantation, liver transplantation and in particular predictive models of graft survival and allocation, as well as liver metastases from colorectal cancer. He was appointed Privat-Docent (PD) at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva in 2015, and lecturer in 2021.

Moreover, Doctor Andres is responsible for pre-graduate teaching in surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva (Master level) and is the referent within the Division of Digestive Surgery for post-graduate training in surgery and digestive surgery with the Swiss Institute for Medical Education.

He is a member of the scientific committees of the Swiss Foundation for Innovation and Training in Surgery (SFITS) and of the Swiss Transplantation Cohort (STCS). He is a member of several national and international societies in general, hepato-biliary and transplantation surgery .
