Professor Thierry Berney is Director of the of the Division of Transplantation of the University Hospitals of Geneva, and Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva. He studied medicine at the University of Geneva.
After training in general surgery in Switzerland, he continued with a specialization in transplantation surgery at the Catholic University of Louvain (Brussels, Belgium) and at the University of Miami (United States). He also specialized in digestive surgery, notably of the pancreas and stomach.
In parallel with his clinical activity, Professor Berney is in charge of an important clinical and fundamental research group at the University of Geneva, whose main field of research is the transplantation of islets of Langerhans, a field in which he is an internationally recognized expert.
Professor Berney is the author of over 300 publications. His work is supported by numerous national and international research grants (National Scientific Research Fund, National Institutes of Health of the USA , Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
He was the president of several international societies, including the ESOT (European Society of Organ Transplantation) and is currently editor-in-chief of the journal Transplant International.
