The HUG Neurosurgery division provides diagnosis and surgical treatment of nervous system pathologies in both adults and children.

Its expertise covers several specialized areas:

  • Brain surgery : this specialty includes the treatment of brain tumors, vascular pathologies (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural fistulas or cavernomas), as well as head trauma, pituitary gland trauma, and hydrocephalus. Some forms of epilepsy resistant to drug treatment may also require surgery.

  • Spinal surgery : the department treats various spinal conditions, such as lumbar or cervical disc herniations, spinal stenosis, vertebral fractures and certain deformities requiring surgical correction such as spinal fusion.

  • Pediatric neurosurgery : this is for children with congenital malformations, brain tumors or other neurological disorders requiring care adapted to their age and development.

  • Neuromonitoring : this technique allows real-time monitoring of neurological functions during surgical procedures in order to optimize patient safety and limit the risks of post-operative complications.

Care pathway

The care pathway begins with a specialized consultation, during which a neurosurgeon performs a thorough assessment. A preoperative assessment is then performed, including imaging examinations and functional tests to precisely plan the procedure.

Once these steps are completed, the surgical procedure is performed using the technique best suited to the patient's condition and specific needs.

Postoperative monitoring is then implemented, including a personalized rehabilitation program in collaboration with physiotherapists to optimize functional recovery.

Thus, the Neurosurgery division team offers care tailored to the specific needs of each patient.
