Chemsex and Sexualised Drug Use

Chemsex refers to the use of psychoactive substances in a sexual context, with the aim of facilitating, prolonging, or intensifying sexual encounters.

Most people who engage in chemsex do so occasionally and experience no harm. However, chemsex is associated with a number of risks:

  • Substance addiction and overdose
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne infections
  • Mental health issues
  • Impact on sexuality

The use of psychoactive substances can also impair the ability to give clear, free, and mutual consent to sexual activity.

Care and Support

The specialised team offers inclusive, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary care to anyone who has questions or concerns about their substance use during sex. Relatives can also seek information and advice.

The first appointment provides an opportunity to discuss the situation and identify the person’s needs before proposing individualised support, which may include:

  • Harm reduction consultations, providing tools to reduce risks associated with substance use

In person consultations are preferred, but video consultations can be organised.
