To ensure your surgery and postoperative recovery go as smoothly as possible, we invite you to follow a few recommendations in the days leading up to your operation.
How can I best prepare ?
To ensure your surgery goes well, please follow these recommendations.
Preoperative physiotherapy session : You will receive an invitation to a group session. Its goal is to provide guidance on posture during your activities.
Physical activity : Continue your physical activities and walking, as long as your pain allows.
Smoking : It is recommended to stop smoking to reduce the risk of lung complications and wound infections. If you need help, a specialized consultation can be offered.
Alcohol : Do not consume alcohol the day before surgery to avoid interactions with medications. This also significantly reduces the risk of wound infections. If you need help, speak with your primary care physician.
Nutrition : Nutritional status plays an important role in the success of surgery and recovery. We pay special attention to your weight, its changes, and your diet before surgery. If you are underweight, have lost weight, or eat very little, an appointment will be scheduled with nutrition specialists.
Regular medication : It is important to stop, at least seven to ten days before admission, any medication that affects blood thinning or contains acetylsalicylic acid (e.g., Aspirin®, Plavix®, Sintrom®). Consult your primary care physician or cardiologist to adjust your treatment.
Recommendations for the Day Before Surgery
Body care : If you are coming to the hospital on the day of your surgery, take a shower the night before and again in the morning using the antibacterial soap prescribed to you. Then put on clean clothes. After the shower :
- Do not apply any products to your body
- Do not wear makeup or nail polish
- Do not shave the surgical area
Nutrition : The day before surgery, you may eat and drink normally, avoiding alcohol. On the day of surgery, you must fast from midnight, or at least six hours before the procedure. Up to two hours before surgery, you may drink clear liquids (no milk, no fruit juice with pulp, no carbonated or alcoholic beverages). Stop smoking from midnight onward.
