HUG statement on the humanitarian situation in the Middle East

Geneva, 12th June 2025 - In accordance with its public service mission, the Geneva University Hospital (HUG) guarantees accessible care for all, within a framework of neutrality, respect, and inclusion. Accordingly, HUG welcomes and treats all patients, without discrimination on the grounds of origin, religion, or gender.

HUG is aware of the deep concern felt by many of its staff members regarding the ongoing, catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories and in Israel. The institution expresses its support and reminds all personnel that, in accordance with the law, the expression of individual opinions within the institution is recognized and protected.

In keeping with its humanitarian commitment and adherence to the Geneva Conventions, HUG unequivocally condemns all attacks on healthcare systems and medical personnel and expresses its solidarity with civilian populations who lose access to healthcare by dint of ongoing conflict and armed violence. This tragic loss for the inhabitants of Gaza is part of a similar dynamic observed in the majority of the approximately 120 armed conflicts raging around the world.

The World Health Organization’s “Surveillance System for Attacks on Health Care”  recorded nearly 1,800 incidents targeting healthcare systems in 2024 alone. Every attack is one too many.

HUG actively partners with humanitarian organizations operating in the field, including Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In this context, it supports all efforts aimed at safeguarding non-discriminatory access to healthcare for the sick and wounded. The HUG affirms that it has no partnerships with any of the parties to the conflict in the Middle East.

Under international humanitarian law, healthcare systems and facilities are protected spaces. They must not be attacked or exploited for military purposes by warring parties. In any armed conflict, both civilians and healthcare professionals must always be protected.

HUG reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring access to healthcare for all in accordance with the principles of solidarity, neutrality, impartiality, and respect for human dignity. The hospital is committed to ensuring, day after day, that its values of humanity, respect, and inclusion are reflected in every aspect of its operations.
