To limit the purchase of new equipment and promote sustainable consumption and production, the HUG have set up a number of initiatives. They aim to optimize the lifespan of equipment, in particular by promoting reuse and circular economy cycles.

Reusing, repairing, donating, reselling or buying equipment with a second life are all actions that contribute to the circular economy and the preservation of resources.

Promoting the second life of equipment and contributing to solidarity

The institution also donates its equipment, enabling it to be given a second life.

In 2024, over 1,200 items of medical equipment and appliances, such as hospital beds and examination and treatment equipment, were given a second life through donations in Europe and around the world. 13 tonnes of IT equipment - 60% more than in 2023 - were donated to a Geneva-based social enterprise for reconditioning

Promoting circular economy cycles

The HUG continue their commitment with reuse initiatives.
In 2024, more than 30 devices were donated to hospitals, nursing schools and research centers in Switzerland. 80 items of equipment were recycled via companies specializing in the repair and resale of medical equipment, and some 30 devices were put back into circulation within the HUG.

The HUG have actively contributed to Geneva's circular economy via the Re-sources platform: over 11 tonnes of equipment (medical, maintenance, etc.) have been made available and over 3 tonnes of second-hand equipment (furniture, kitchen, etc.) have been acquired for new use within the hospital.
