In recent years, the HUG have implemented actions aimed at reducing their carbon footprint and limiting the purchase of computer equipment. These actions include evaluating the equipment needs of their employees accurately as possible, steering them towards models with lower carbon footprints, and optimizing the energy management parameters of personal computers.

In 2022, various measures were implemented to limit the consumption of IT equipment including:

  • The time before a computer goes into standby has been halved for all computers and multifunction printers,
  • defaulting to duplex and black and white printing has led to a significant reduction in printing,
  • the lifespan of computers has been extended to six years for desktops and a minimum of five years for laptops,
  • the HUG have continued their efforts to optimize datacenter operations and reduce energy consumption.

In 2023, the HUG  become the first Swiss and European hospital to be certified Level II sustainable IT. This accreditation highlights the constant commitment of HUG towards integrating sustainable practices into its IT infrastructures.

To pursue their efforts and maintain their high level of service, in 2024 the HUG integrated new energy monitoring indicators into a dynamic status report. These indicators show the greenhouse gas emissions linked to the acquisition and use of IT equipment.

The energy consumption of a datacenter has been calculated and energy optimization measures have been proposed.
13 tonnes of IT equipment still in use were donated to a social enterprise for reconditioning (60% more than in 2023).

The provision of training courses on the in-house training platform, and awareness-raising initiatives such as World digitial cleanUP day and Sustainability IT day, demonstrate the HUG's commitment to pursuing actions in the direction of digital responsibility.
