Aware that healthcare activities significantly contribute to the environmental impacts of the institution, the HUG have set various objectives in their sustainability strategy to make medical and nursing practices more sustainable.
In 2024, the ecological transition in healthcare approach was put into practice with the launch of an eco-care unit label specific to the HUG. This label, inspired by a French initiative of the Bordeaux University Hospital, aims to encourage and support the cultural change of medical and nursing staff towards more eco-responsible care practices.
It is based on a catalog of some forty technical sheets proposing various actions to reduce the environmental impact of medical and nursing practices. By the end of 2024, ten care units, both outpatient and inpatient, were involved in the labeling process.
The Choosing greenly project, which was completed at the end of 2024, implemented several pilot initiatives in eco-responsible medicine, thanks to the support of the Private Foundation of the HUG.
Continuing education modules have been designed, tested and used as the basis for the creation of an online training course for hospital staff.
