Reducing and optimizing energy consumption is one of the key objectives of our sustainability strategy. The HUG also participate in federal and cantonal energy-saving programs.

Several actions were undertaken, such as optimizing ventilation management and replacing certain light fixtures. In 2024, a special study of the energy consumption of certain radiology equipment was carried out, and specific measures resulted in savings of over 40,000 kWh of electricity.

With regard to heating, the reduction of more than 5.5 GWh by 2024 is mainly due to measures to optimize the boiler rooms at the Cluse-Roseraie and Belle-Idée sites operated by the HUG. This represents a saving of more than a year's heating for the Loëx Hospital.

As a result of measures to improve buildings, optimize installations and equipment, step up consumption monitoring, reduce energy consumption and raise awareness, total energy consumption was down in 2024. It has been reduced from 176 GWh in 2021 to 139 GWh in 2024 (-21%).

In 2024, several studies were conducted to replace HUG's boilers with renewable energy systems. Pumping tests on the groundwater were carried out in Loëx. Preliminary studies for the arrival of thermal networks in the Cluse-Roseraie sector also began.
