Sustainability : recognition for the HUG

The Geneva University Hospital (HUG) is proud to be the first hospital in Europe and the second in the world to obtain the Healthcare Sustainability Certification, delivered by Joint Commission International (JCI). Following a rigorous audit, this certification recognizes the HUG’s excellence and leadership in the field of sustainability.

The certification rewards the institution's commitments to social and environmental responsibility, as outlined in its 2030 sustainability strategy. For the past twenty years, the hospital has undertaken numerous initiatives in areas as diverse as energy, sustainable food, responsible digital practices, ecological transition in healthcare, a green pharmacy, biodiversity and green spaces, mobility and accessibility, cleaning, logistics, diversity, equity and inclusion, gender equality, inclusion in care, sustainable procurement, and project management.

These results stem from the dedication of Sophie Meisser, who leads the Sustainability office, and the hospital teams who every day drive sustainability forward at HUG.

Jointly developed by JCI and the Geneva Sustainability Centre of the International Hospital Federation (FIH-IHF), the Healthcare Sustainability Certification is the first international sustainability standard specifically designed for hospitals.
