Significant progress of HUG in the Newsweek ranking

The HUG move up in the Newsweek ranking of the best specialized hospitals and the best smart hospitals.
The University Hospital of Geneva (HUG) demonstrates significant progress in the 2025 Newsweek ranking, which lists the best specialized hospitals in the world. This ranking is based on accreditations, patient feedback, and a global survey where tens of thousands of healthcare professionals are invited to provide recommendations within their field of expertise.
Through its significant results, the HUG now features in 7 of the 12 medical specialties assessed, compared to only four in 2024. "This is a testament to the expertise of our staff in cutting-edge medical fields. It also reflects their commitment to the continuous improvement of their practices and the quality of care they provide to patients," emphasizes Robert Mardini, Director geneal of the HUG.
This year, in addition to re-gaining its position in the ranking for cardiac surgery, the HUG sees its leadership recognized in three new specialties: neurosurgery, orthopedics, and pulmonology. Moreover, the institution maintains its position in obstetrics and gynecology, where it plays a key role in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
Finally, the HUG has climbed the ranks in cardiology and oncology. Competition is particularly fierce in the latter specialty: 11 Swiss institutions feature in the list, reflecting the nation’s high level of expertise in the fight against cancer.
The world’s 100 Best Smart Hospitals
For the first time, the HUG has earned its spot in the global top 100 hospitals recognized for their standout work in implementing new medical technologies. This achievement underscores the institution's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technologies to improve patient care.
The ranking is based primarily on a global survey of healthcare professionals, as well as evaluations of how hospitals use technology.
Through its continued excellence, the HUG confirms its position as a key player in healthcare in Switzerland and internationally, further enhancing its reputation, and fostering confidence among patients and healthcare professionals alike
