The HUG continue their commitment to better waste management and reduced food waste.
Increase in the use of reusable tableware
In order to combat food waste, in 2024 several initiatives aimed at reducing residual waste and food waste have been reinforced.
Over 11,690 reusable containers will be made available to the HUG staff for takeaway meals (up 30% on 2023).
In support of this awareness campaign, the institution took part in the RE:PAS initiative, a challenge proposed by the Canton of Geneva, which aims to limit plastic waste by promoting the use of reusable containers. An awareness-raising campaign on the premises and food display cases of staff restaurants help to promote the use of reusable containers.
Eco-bottles and reduction of disposable tableware
The “eco-bottles” project launched in 2023, supported by the Private Foundation of the HUG and Loterie Romande, aims to replace mineral water bottles served to hospital patients with reusable bottles. Thanks to this initiative, by the end of 2024, 52 care units had been equipped with water coolers, and the use of bottled mineral water was reduced by 26% compared with 2022.
