Renewable electricity production

HUG

The HUG is working to control its energy consumption and to develop new sources of energy, in particular through solar panels.

The electricity consumed by the HUG is 100% renewable and partially produced in Geneva. The electricity generated by the hospital's photovoltaic power plants is consumed by the hospital itself.

To promote the internal production and consumption of renewable electricity, the hospital has been investing in the installation of solar panels for several years.

  • In 2024, a further 478 m2 of solar panels were installed on the roofs next to the new helipad.
  • At present, 4,126 m2 of photovoltaic solar panels are in operation, supplying the hospital with electricity.
  • In 2024, these installations produced 526 MWh of electricity, equivalent to the energy consumption of 176 Geneva households.

Between 2021 and 2024, significant progress was made in terms of self-generation of electricity, as the surface area of photovoltaic panels almost doubled. However, the abandonment of a major solar carport project on the Trois-Chêne site, and a delay in the implementation of other installations, will prevent us from reaching the 7,000 m² target set in the 2025 sustainability action plan.

Since 2022, several energy-saving awareness campaigns have been conducted to educate staff on eco-friendly practices for both winter and summer. In the summer of 2024, a communication was sent to staff, reminding them that HUG's electricity consumption during this period is strongly linked to the need for cooling premises.
