Carbon footprint
In 2009, the HUG was the first European hospital to carry out a carbon footprint assessment, which identified the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
Since 2021, The HUG produces an annual carbon footprint assessment that quantifies the institution's greenhouse gas emissions and identifies the most significant sources of emissions. This carbon footprint analysis is based on the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting methodology, which is a globally standardized framework for accounting for and reporting emissions from private and public sector operations.
In 2025, the HUG's GHG emissions amount to more than 103,900 tons of CO2-eq. They have stabilized overall compared to 2024. As in 2024, no new buildings were brought into service in 2025. Emissions are broken down as follows:
