What is accessibility?

An accessible website is a site where all visitors understand the content.

It must be accessible:

  • to people with disabilities (visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, mentally handicapped, etc.).
  • on all devices: computers, tablets, mobile phones; but also on devices specifically related to a disability
  • in all types of environments (brightness, sound level, etc.)

What are the rules for accessibility?

The World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) has established technical standards. Some of these rules are as follows:

  • Establish enough contrast between the displayed content and the background of the site to make sure the information is legible
  • Prioritize content with titles to make the page easier to understand and encourage visitor navigation
  • Optimize fonts (shape of the letters, spaces, punctuation, etc.) to improve the text content's readability
  • Provide subtitles and transcriptions of multimedia content to allow video and audio content to be read

The HUG and accessibility

We are continuously working on improving our website, especially with its accessibility issues. In early 2019, we redesigned our website to include a high contrast version for people with a visual impairment. A button located in the header of the site allows a person to display all the pages on the site in black and white with one click of the mouse (except images, videos and some gray elements like the menu or the footer).

Site contrasté

We use specialized tools, such as Site Improve, to detect problems and identify areas to improve accessibility on our website. We correct errors and deploy adapted solutions.

We are continuously working on accessibility criteria to detect improvements to implement. Quite a few fixes related to issues with headers, images and links have already been implemented and we are continuing these efforts.
