Dear colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to invite you all to attend the 19th Interdisciplinary Cerebrovascular Symposium hosted by Philippe Bijlenga, Sven Hirsch, Sandrine Morel, Paolo Machi, Emmanuel Carrera, and Julien Haemmerli at the University of Geneva, Switzerland on August 17-19 2023. The meeting will be held at the Forum Geneva by Credit Suisse close to the central railway station, 7 minutes from the International Geneva Airport and just 500m from the lake side and with magnificent views of the Jet d’Eau fountain and Mont Blanc.

Geneva is populated with just over 500'000 inhabitants of which more than 40% are foreigners. It is the most international city in Europe hosting 39 International Organisations, 178 State Permanent Missions and more than 400 Non-Governmental Organisations. It has a rich history that dates back more than 4'000 years. Initially a bridge over the Rhône river, Geneva later became a Roman city at the border between the empire and the Helvets. Geneva has a long tradition of independence, hospitality, trade and intellectual exchanges. It held a significant role in the Protestant  Reformation being the home of Calvin, who founded the Geneva University in 1559. During the 18th century, Geneva was home to many philosophers and scientists like Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Voltaire, de Saussure, Candolle who enlightened the city. During the 19th century Henry Dunant founded the Red Cross and laid the groundwork for the modern conception of human rights and international diplomacy and collaboration resulting in today’s international governmental organisation. Geneva hosts the European Headquarters of the United Nations since 1946. The city is also home to the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), where Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 and where the Higgs boson was first detected in 2012.

The first Interdisciplinary Cerebrovascular Symposium took place in Geneva in 2004 and was organised by Prof Daniel A. Rüfenacht, Prof Pedro Lylyk and Prof Makoto Ohta. ICS has become a premier meeting, gathering experts with different backgrounds: geneticists, biologists, clinicians, engineers and more recently, data analysts and modellers using AI with a common aim to better understand cerebrovascular pathophysiology and develop new tools to diagnose and treat cerebrovascular diseases. The 2023 opus will cover physiology of the cerebrovascular autoregulation and implications in ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke, as well as mechanisms of vessel wall remodelling, aneurysm formation and progression, arterio-venous malformation and arterio-venous fistula natural history modelling and treatments, as well as discussions on cavernous angioma, vasospasm, hydrocephalus and cerebrovascular disautonomy induced by trauma. The sessions will focus on key questions addressed by experts from different backgrounds ending with a moderated roundtable discussion. It has been decided to leave enough time between the sessions and organise social events to promote collaborations.

To register please access the ICS 2023 website.

Looking forward to seeing you in Geneva on August 17th-19th 2023 !
