Thyroid Tumors and Neuroendocrine Tumors

What are the thyroid tumors ?

Thyroid tumors are common. These can often be benign nodules but sometimes also cancerous ones.
The main types of thyroid cancer are papillary thyroid carcinoma and follicular thyroid cancer.

What are the neuroendocrine tumors ?

Neuroendocrine tumors on the other hand are rare tumors. They originate in neuroendocrine cells that are present in the endocrine system (a set of glands that produce hormones) and other parts of the body, the digestive system and the respiratory system among others. These tumors can be benign or cancerous.

In this case they are neuroendocrine carcinomas :

  • gastrointestinal neuroendocrine carcinoma
  • pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma
  • neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung.

Neuroendocrine tumors of the endocrine system originate in the cells of endocrine glands: medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma and other rare tumors.

The program for thyroid tumors and neuroendocrine tumors

The program for thyroid tumors and neuroendocrine tumors assembles around the patient all the cutting-edge expertise at HUG, both medical and surgical, and ensures care excellence for these diseases. Each patient suffering from these diseases benefits from a personalized treatment strategy. In the program, the clinical situation of each patient is discussed at the tumor board, or multidisciplinary seminar, where all medical experts from relevant medical and surgical specialties are present. At the tumor board, experts interact to clarify the diagnosis, discuss treatments tailored to the disease and suggest a treatment plan approved by all experts.

The program for thyroid tumors and neuroendocrine tumors offers the patient:

  • multidisciplinary care for all pathologies
  • state-of-the-art technical facilities for carrying out investigations and treatments
  • combined cutting-edge expertise in diagnosis and pathology imaging
  • cutting-edge expertise in surgical treatments (endocrine, pulmonary, digestive)
  • minimally invasive surgical techniques
