Preclinical research

Contenu

Pre-clinical studies in animals, carried out in compliance with the jurisdiction in force, is a fundamental step in advancing in the understanding of human pathologies and/or in developing effective treatments.

For the performance of pre-clinical studies, the HUG NeuroCentre helps to draft the documents necessary for animal experimentation authorization requests. It connects investigators with research platforms such as the central animal facility of the University Medical Center or the small animal imaging platform.

The NeuroCentre also helps with the submission of requests on the Animex platform and the drafting of annual reports to the cantonal veterinary authorities.

Flexible electrodes for brain function mapping in minipigs
Contenu

About 1% of the population is affected by epilepsy, an over-excitation of a small part of the brain that may be caused by malformations, tumours or strokes. These over-excitations may damage the brain and affect cognitive or motor functions if they occur frequently.

About 10 to 30% of patients do not respond to drug treatment and require alternative treatments such as surgery involving the use of electrodes. This project aims to evaluate the safety and bio-compatibility of a new generation of electrodes.

Effects of accessory fuels (sodium lactate and ketone bodies) on cerebral haemodynamics in a subarachnoid haemorrhage trial in a rat: experimental approach
Contenu

Subarachnoid haemorrhage due to cerebral aneurysm rupture is a serious condition associated with a high mortality rate. Among the complications, vasospasm, which leads to delayed neurological deficits, is one of the main causes of secondary deterioration. The treatments currently available for the prevention of vasospasm are ineffective.

The aim of this project is to study the haemodynamic effect of two accessory fuels, sodium lactate and ketone bodies, in order to open up a new avenue of treatment of vasospasm for patients suffering from subarachnoid haemorrhaging.
