La médecine péri-opératoire comprend l'anesthésie, le traitement de la douleur aiguë, le travail obstétrical, les soins intensifs chirurgicaux, la réanimation cardio-respiratoire, la médecine d'urgence et la prise en charge de traumatisés.
La médecine factuelle est le processus qui consiste à systématiquement rechercher des études modernes, les évaluer et utiliser leurs conclusions pour établir des bases de décisions cliniques. Ainsi la médecine factuelle péri-opératoire traite de l'élaboration de décisions rationnelles en médecine péri-opératoire : qu'est-ce qui doit être recommandé aux patients ? Quelles interventions doivent être menées ? Quelles sont les priorités de recherche ?
