Liver cysts are lesions containing fluid. They are most often asymptomatic and incidentally discovered during radiological examinations. They can sometimes bleed, rupture, or become infected. In most cases, an ultrasound or CT scan can determine the type of cyst, but sometimes MRI is necessary.

Liver cysts are rarely cancerous

Depending on the cause, cysts can be benign. More rarely, these lesions can develop into cancer, or even be cancerous. The cysts can also be the result of a bacterial or parasitic infection. The management varies greatly depending on the type of cyst, and can therefore range from no monitoring to surgical treatment.
