After starting a specialized consultation in the 2000s, the HUG opened the Breast Center in June 2011. Since 2014, the HUG Breast Center has benefited from the quality label assigned to it by the Swiss League Against Cancer and the Swiss Senology Society.
Thanks to its multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art technical platform, the Breast Center offers comprehensive and personalized treatment for breast cancer in a single location. As a result, patients can find all of the support and care they need at the Breast Center, whether this involves performing a diagnosis or providing long-term therapy and follow-up.
Located within the HUG Maternity, the Breast Center brings together about twenty distinct specialists, including gynecologists, geneticists, oncologists, senologists, pathologists, radio-oncologists, plastic surgeons, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers, dietitians and specialized nurses.
After the breast cancer diagnosis, these specialists will make important therapeutic decisions together based on international recommendations during multidisciplinary or Tumor Board meetings, one of which will be preoperative and the other postoperative, and they will be held once a week. In the spirit of multidisciplinary and coordinated care, all specialists working at the Breast Center contribute to ensuring the best treatment at each step of the care pathway, from diagnosis to rehabilitation.
The Breast Center is also a referral center for breast cancer screening.
